The Black Devils' March--A Doomed Odyssey: The 1st Polish Armoured Division 1939-1945, by Evan McGilvray

The Black Devils March is an account of how the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the West under the leadership of General Stanislaw Maczek, arose out of the ashes of defeat and while attempting to avoid the internal politics of the Polish Government in Exile, was able to return to Europe in August 1944 on the side of the Western Allies. In Europe the Division achieved glory, honor and victory but was unable to liberate Poland owing to the politics of the post-war settlement in Europe.

The account of the formation and combat service of the Division is fully researched from Polish, English and German sources, and includes training in Scotland, the unit's sharp introduction to warfare in the Normandy bocage, the Falaise Gap and Hill 262, the advance into Belgium and Holland, and final victory on German soil. The text is supported by nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps, and detailed appendices, including a list of the Division's medal recipients. In addition, there are four pages of outstanding color profiles showing the camouflage and markings of the unit's tanks and other vehicles.

The politics of the Polish Army are examined as well as the historical legacy of the Polish soldier in exile.

Much of the book was researched from hard-to-find Polish sources. The text is supported by 4 pages of color AFV profiles, nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps and appendices.

About the Author
Evan McGilvray was born in August 1961 in Winchester, Hampshire. He is a graduate of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London (UCL). Following this he undertook post-graduate studies at the University of Bradford and the University of Leeds, where he researched the politics of the Polish Army from 1918 to date. He also taught at the two universities. Evan is quite happy to challenge the myths that Poles have created around the Polish Army and the role of Poland during the Second World War. He also has an interest in other militaries and their role in society - quite simply civil-military relations - Poland being one of the most interesting European examples. At present Evan is writing a new history of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in readiness for its seventieth anniversary in 2014, as well as researching the military politics regarding the involvement of General Sir Ian Hamilton at the Dardanelles during 1915. He is also anticipating the opening of the archives relating to the Falklands War in 2012. To relax he has learnt to ignore the rest of the world, and notes, "Despite what Poles think, I am not a Scot, only in name!"

Excellent appraisal of an overlooked formation
By Jackson Branch
Whilst the bare outline of the existence of Polish troops in NW Europe during the 1944/45 campaign is known by many, Mr McGilvray's book puts 'flesh on the bones'.

The author is to be praised for his insight into the background to the formation of the division, and interwar Polish politics. The creation, equipping and training of the division is covered in great detail, followed by an exhaustive account of the campaign in NW Europe, mostly based on Polish and German language sources.

The text is complemented by over 100 photos, reproduced very clearly and aided by the book's large format.

Overall, a praiseworthy effort to delve deeper into the tangled web of Polish involvement in the Allied cause during WWII.

I must add that contrary to another review on Amazon.com of this book, I found the book well laid-out and free from many noticeable errors!

Big Book - Bigger Disappointment
By Matthew's Father
I was really eager to learn something about General Maczek and the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the Second World War. Unfortunately, this book failed to live up to my expectations. I know no more about General Maczek now, after reading the book, than I did before, except that he is the only World War 2 Polish General to live to see Poland regain its freedom. Alas he was then too frail to return to Poland.

The book is basically a summary of each and every river and canal the Division crossed and the names of all the towns liberated in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Even the description of the battle for the Falaise Gap failed to satisfy my curiosity. And I expected a lot more to be said about how the Polished Armored Division accepted the surrender of the Nazi Navy at Wilhemshaven.

Helion Publishers should be exceedingly embarrassed by the dreadful editing job. The text suffers from repetitive repetition of words in the same or succeeding sentences and gross spelling errors that are a major distraction to the reader.

Although the author's name seems to be English (Scottish?) the book reads as if it had been composed in another language and then poorly translated into English.

Finally, the large format book size inconveniences the reader.

I guess I gave it 2 stars for "effort" - I'm not sure!

When too much is too much.
By I.K.
Is it possible to have too much information? I purchased the book hoping to find out more information about the Polish Army training camps in Canada and Scotland for World War 2. The book really dealt with individual invasion components: Normandy and France, Holland , and Germany. The text was dense with military abbreviations. For a non-combatant, it was extremely hard to follow the narrative and the flow of battle. In the end, I found myself looking more through the photographs and the quality of reproduction was quite poor. A list of various medal recipients among the indices might be useful to some people tracking soldiers but this is not a complete list. The overall appearance of the book was similar to a high school yearbook - a slim, hardcover volume. I was somewhat disappointed with the contents too. No doubt there was a lot of information to sort through but it is not very readable except perhaps to a military scholar.
