“It was a sunny day in Madras. Aananthi had come to the great port with his mother Aananthy to meet his father Aanaimugan. Aanaimugan was the Taṇbal (captain) of a maňci (cargo ship) that was returning to Madras from Southeast Asia.
Aananthi liked visiting the port. Here he saw large Yaksha junks from South China and Naga war ships in port to buy metals to make weapons to fight the Vietnamese . He was especially excited to see the Kappal (ships) from Malay. The malumi (captain) of the Malay ship was Aditya. Aditya had been born in Madras.
Aananthi was excited because Aanaimugan had promised him, that he would train him to become a malumi of a maňci or kappal if he kept up his studies in math, the nautical sciences and Tamil. Aananthi knew his studies were important, because at this time Tamil (a Dravidian language) was spoken in the major towns and cities from India to China, all the way to the Islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.”
