Good so far...

Preliminary Review:
I am writing a prelimary review having read but a few chapters just because there are none presently. I will update later, hopefully.
Why produce this book? Dr. Tew says, "“I was doing personal reading in Luke and decided to dig deeper,” Tew said regarding his research choice. “I had studied Luke before and knew the big picture. But the more I examined the Gospel, the greater my depth of appreciation became of Luke’s literary masterpiece.”
The book has both a look at the details of the Greek text, a fresh translation of the Gospel, and commentary geared to average pastors and lay teachers. Tew thought it important to give us the result of his study in a readable work.
“In higher education, we are too often accused of being scholars writing to scholars,” Tew said. “My challenge was to communicate the results of a scholarly work in a way anyone could understand the timeless meaning of Luke’s Gospel."
Dr. Tew is at Howard Payne University as both provost and chief academic officer. That is not the normal background one would expect to right a serious commentary on the Gospel of Luke. To be sure, many pastors have written commentaries with even less background, but they are not trying to be academically sound nor even focused toward homeletic excellence. Tew wants to accomplish a bit of both. So, how does he do?
So far, I give him 4 stars, so that should say that I think he does quite well. Some of his "discoveries" I wished he supported better. But, then again, he does't want to bog down in details. And I am one that wants those details. He does use footnotes for reference and explanation, but he doesn't have a broad-range of other sources up to this point in my readings. That will bother few others, I am sure.
So, am I giving him just a "meh" for academic excellence? Not at all. He has more Greek language expertise than I by a factor of about 20! So, understand, it is not for lack of knowledge or skill that this book will not look overly rigorous. Rather, looking to his preface (which is worth reading) he tells us he desires to "bridge the gap between [scholarly] biblical interpreter and [pastoral] biblical proclaimer." A worthy goal indeed. (I can't help thinking about the superb commentary by Allen P. Ross on Genesis that does this very thing... with such excellence that it is a MUST READ.) So, I was pretty pumped when I saw Tew's focus.
And those not familiar with the languages: I think Tew does an EXCELLENT job bringing language discoveries to the average reader. You will not get lost or bored with anything in these pages. He clearly indicates Greek words and constructions and tells us why they are important in the context which he finds them. VERY USEFUL.
I like the way that Tew relies on the clues present in the Greek language to help determine his outline and pericopes, I would that he would have given a bit more attention to those pericopes (sections of scripture) for the benefit of the pastor/preacher. He skips over much rich material in order to keep the length down, I imagine. Still, what he has is mostly good and insightful.
What useful details are given? The thrice use of Grace to announce Jesus's birth. The Lukan developement of his unique term, "Filled with the Spirit." Yep. I didn't realize Luke was the only author to use that phrase. 3 times in Luke, 6 times in Acts. Greek exploration of terms like "Blameless" "upright" "bless"or "journey." And the various narrative devices used by luke to mark out passage divisions. All useful. Still, he does skip over a lot of text in order to give details on some parts. against others. Three short paragraphs are given to Mary's Magnificat. He skips over verses 69-80 of Chapter 1 completely. This isn't the end of the world... I am sure he does so for reason, but it will drive you nuts if you are wanting some insight into those important passages (and others like them).
If I get the opportunity to finish this book, I will update this review. For now, this brief review may give you a clue of what this author is trying to do and whether or not you might find it useful.
