Oddball romance between two lovers of Shakespeare

The editorial review is slightly misleading, as is the back cover blurb. Miss Ellen Grimsley, the heroine of this book, is not a student at Oxford University and its colleges (impossible then, in an era where women were not even allowed to listen to lectures). Rather, she is attending a rather disappointingly mediocre seminary at Oxford (the town). Whence then her Oxford career? Ah, that is another story, and one that kept me up, laughing slightly until 1 am.
The story begins with a devastatingly funny portrayal of the Grimsley family. Think the Tallant family (in Arabella) crossed with the family of the heroine in the film The Breakfast Club. The family is country-based, of moderate means, and of a farming background - very minor gentry, in fact. Ellen Grimsley's elder sister Honoria is all set to marry the nitwitted son of a pompous baronet. Her elder brother Gordon is frittering his time away at Oxford; his family has decided he is to be a gentleman, and to that end, some terms at Oxford will be followed by a spell in the army. Gordon is barely scraping through his first year as required. His younger sister Ellen and his younger brother Ralph are the oddballs, or the odd ones in this rather dull family - both have a passion for learning, and especially for literature. Ralph is a Shakespeare fanatic, and his older sister cannot but absorb some of the Bard's lines. Her fate has all but been decided for her - she is to marry suitably, perhaps a young farmer with no interest in books. Poor Miss Grimsley!
It is fortunate then that her father's aunt has the bottles of fine wine that her father had recklessly promised the baronet (future father-in-law of his eldest daughter). To obtain these bottles for the wedding, the father must promise to send his daughter Ellen to a seminary in Oxford, run by the aunt's friends. So off Ellen goes with her aunt - and near the town, she meets an untidy but interesting scholar names James Gatewood.
The seminary proves to be a disappointment. Instead of studying geometry and Shakespeare (let alone geography) Ellen is expected to stitch samplers (which she does badly) and confine herself to a smattering of French. Most of Shakespeare is not allowed in the school library, some of his plays being considered indecent. [Did you know that MEASURE FOR MEASURE was an indecent play? Ah yes.]. Well, fortunately for Miss Ellen whose tongue gets her into trouble from the outset, she has a couple of friends, the maid Becky and Mr James Gatewood who falls into the habit of sending her chocolates (a slight anachronism) whenever Miss Ellen is being punished by being forced to write out lines and thus missing her meals.
In the meantime, brother Gordon gets into trouble in London town. He is already in trouble with the warden of his college, having missed one too many lectures. And now, he has no money to pay a student to write his essays for him! Oh dear. Well, fortunately sister Ellen is in Oxford, and is persuaded or cajoled into writing a brilliant essay on Shakespeare for him - which Gordon passes off as his own at a public reading of all the students' essays. Ellen has received help, not to mention a copy of the play, from James Gatewood. Gordon is duly applauded for his sudden brilliance, and persuades Ellen to write another essay and another. The great Shakespearean scholar Lord Chesney (a pun perhaps on the Regency author Marion Chesney?) even deigns to attend Gordon's lectures and obtains the only fair copies of the essays from him. All well and good, except that Ellen is seething with fury that a) she is not allowed the education that her brother takes for granted; b) she is stuck in this miserable seminary; and c) that her brother is taking her efforts for granted and taking the praise that he has not earned. She has some vague hopes that one day her efforts will be acknowledged, but now the dratted Lord Chesney has her only copies of her essays (she failed to make copies for herself, you see).
In the meantime, Ellen has been skirmishing with her roommate, Fanny Bland, shortly to be sister-in-law to her sister Honoria. Unfortunately, Ellen has also fallen into the trap of wanting to hear her essays read out in the august halls of Oxford, and dresses up in her brother's breeches and cloak to sneak into the college. And one day, she is caught on a tip-off from someone, perhaps Fanny - and she is publicly disgraced, and taken home by her father who informs her that she is being traded (in marriage) for a couple of fields to the young farmer who has admired her.
So what happens to Ellen, next? And who is James Gatewood, with such ready access to Lord Chesney's library and with the funds to pay for chocolates and coal alike? Is he really the descendant of a long line of horse-traders? Or, as we suspect (but Ellen does not), is he someone else? And what will happen to Ellen's scholarly ambitions?
I won't tell you the rest of the story, because it will spoil a delightful book. But I strongly encourage you to find it and read it to understand what kind of frustrated aspirations dwelt in the hearts and minds of many a bright young woman whose only options were frequently governessing (for a pittance) or marriage (perhaps to a man without any love of books). This is not so much a romance as an indiction of the withering of many intellects for centuries (although it is hardly radical feminism). And yes, there is a romance. If you are not aware by the middle that James Gatewood loves Ellen Grimsley... well, your standards of romance are very different from mine.

Different: intelligent, witty and brimming with Shakespeare!

I don't need to write a lengthy review of this book, because the review below from bookjunkies has done an excellent job, with the exception of one detail: we, the readers, know from the beginning the true identity of James Gatewood, since this is revealed to us in the prologue.
Kelly's descriptions of Oxford - the town and the university - suggests that she knows both places well; I've visited Oxford many times and am familiar with most of the colleges, and I found no anomalies in her depiction of the town.
I did particularly like her portrayal of Ellen's frustration at not being able to study and participate in learning, and at her brother's wasting of the opportunity he had. Ellen is so well written as a woman who desperately wants to learn and read and argue and develop her mind, and yet is forbidden by the mores and practices of her day. (Great use of St Hilda's, too, Kelly!). Ellen's debates with James on Shakespeare are very well written, and these encounters were a joy to read.
For a very different romance, even from most of Kelly's other novels, this one is well worth a look.

Unique Regency with Lovable Characters

Carla Kelly has become my new all time favorite author. Over the past few months I have read through just about all of her signet regencies that are available for the kindle and eagerly await the upcoming ones. Regency romance is my fallback favorite fiction genre. I'm a speed reader and typically skim through parts of these novels. Ms. Kelly may be the exception to this rule. Her books are easy to get lost in and I absorb every word & nuance.

"Miss Grimsley's Oxford Career" focuses on the intelligent Ellen Grimsley. Because of her gender, she is unable to fulfill her dream of an Oxford education. Her older brother Gordon is uninterested in scholastic pursuits but has been forced to endure one year at Oxford. He has trouble making the grade and enlists Ellen's help in completing the assignments.

Although James Gatewood isn't a victim of gender discrimination, he also is unable to fulfill his scholarly dreams. Family expectations require that he put away his academic pursuits and take care of family business. He and Ellen are thrown together in some awkward situations and hilarity ensues. I can not say enough about this book. The secondary characters are engaging. The romance is so sweet and well paced. I suggest you start this book with the understanding that you will not want to put it down until it is finished.

Rieko Kage is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Tokyo, Japan. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2005. decent and worth having... but nothing more

I did find this book extremely useful and have used it as my definitive reference for XQuery while working with real-world problems. The book was not only informative, comprehensive and filled with useful and easy to follow examples, but also realistic. You will find that any of the basic questions you have can be answered somewhere in this book (of course advanced questions often rely on the specific implementation, which is out of scope for the book and I recommend you hit online resources for those).

I do recommend reading/buying/using this book in your day-to-day work with XML in cooperation with an XQuery implementation. It's a little dry of information for advanced readers, but novice to intermediate readers will find it amazingly helpful.

However... this book has one major shortcoming: it is horribly written and organized.

The book seems to be written in a manner where the author knew exactly what they were talking about but didn't take the time to organize it or write a second and third draft. It feels like a "once-and-done" text and is inconsistent with coverage between all the various topics (for example: the structure of simple path queries is discussed sporadically while simple work with sorting and grouping is gone into a level of overkill in detail).

Good book to have on your shelf (just like the little SQL, Vi, Regex, etc. booklets we all have), but you've definitely got to break out the PostIt Notes to make sure you can find the information throughout the book.

It definitely needs more information here and there, but it's a great place to (at the least) start off and look for basic information.

Best XQuery book available to date!

I've had this XQuery book for about a week now and it has already helped me immensely! Priscilla Walmsley (who was a member of the W3C XML Schema Working Group and I believe the XQuery Working Group as well) is an excellent writer and teacher. Her writing style is clear and concise, as anyone who read her earlier Definitive XML Schema book already knows.

"XQuery" is roughly 2/3 tutorial and 1/3 reference (by page counts). The tutorial material is thoughtfully divided into 25 bite-size chapters. The topics progress nicely from an overview and basics to important concepts such as namespace handlng, modules and static typing. The book includes 5 chapters that focus on handling specific data types (e.g, "Working with Strings"). You don't have to know XSLT but knowing XPath may be helpful. OTOH, XPath is covered in Chap. 4. There is even a chapter targeted at SQL users. I also appreciate the carefully chosen running example that is representative of many XML structures. The book also benefits from special icons indicating tips, gotchas, and compatibility issues. Longtime XML geek Simon St.Laurent was the O'Reilly editor, which is another big plus.

Walmsley has also created an incredibly useful reference site of XQuery functions, both those defined by the W3C specs and numerous others that she wrote. Others may contribute as well. [...]

I have several older XQuery books by various publishers but this book is by far the best. I highly recommend it to web developers, database developers, and data architects with even a modest XML background.

First Impressions

My first impression of this book is that it is fantastic. Just flip through the first chapter and you'll see references to code snippets and valuable explanations of XQuery. This book is what I was seeking. The author knows the reader has an interest in the subject and does not waste time explaining what XML is and why one would want to query it etc. This book is not selling the technology. It teaches it which is a lesson the author of "Querying XML" could learn from.

I am very happy thus far with this book.

Excellent Guide to Positional Chess

Analyze Your Chess is an excellent book for the non-master player (it would probably also be helpful to low masters).
First of all, the book is enjoyable. Crouch discusses his games, with an emphasis on games he should have won or should have drawn, but lost or drew. Crouch's style is positional, which is fine, but his repertoire is limited, and this book features many Scandinavian Defenses, an opening I neither play nor face (since I open with 1. d4) but I still found the games instructive. They are thoroughly annotated without the analysis being overly complex, and there are many instructive middlegames and endgames. Honestly, I am not sure if this book will improve my chess, but I found it an enjoyable read, written very candidly. I like this book!

Quirky but good

I like Crouch's books primarily because of the *very* thorough annotations with emphasis on prose explanations. I find that at times the writing seems a bit odd, perhaps partly because Crouch is Brithish and I'm American, but mainly because the books could at times use more careful editing. I could be mistaken but don't recall having this impression of Crouch's "Chess Secrets: Great Attackers", perhaps because that book (or series) was better edited.

Overall I like his books well enough that when they are on a chess subject of interest to me, I lean towards buying because he is the author. The books, including this one, are well-suited for browsing without a board because of plentiful diagrams and the prose descriptions. In "Analyse your chess", Crouch explains his thinking in great detail in his own games -- I find it fascinating as a very personal look at an IM level player's thinking and consideration of his weaknesses, focusing on errors which hinder his progress (and comeback recovering from a stroke and near blindness).

I was disappointed in the lack of a chronological list of games, although there is an index of games by opponent. The introduction and final chapter discussed this aspect of the book and the results extensivelyand I found the statistical approach of these two sections to be boring but others may not.

All three books mentioned have the "Look Inside" feature at Amazon.com. Reader reviews of Modern Chess shed more light on the editing issues I mentioned (one was titled, "Brilliant, but with editing difficulties"). The day I bought Modern Chess I was shopping with my wife and looked forward to stealing a few minutes to examine it while she tried on clothes. I was at first so concerned with a couple of examples that I feared I'd bought a lemon and looked up those Amazon reviews. Happily the book turned out to be a find and a personal favorite, and I will always consider books by Colin Crouch to be of potential interest.
