praise from Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality
By A Customer
Sex therapist and author Wendy Maltz and writer Suzie Boss have combined their talents in this new book about women's sexual fantasies. Together they explore the origins of women's most private thoughts, the most common fantasy roles for women, and how sexual fantasies may function to enhance one's sex life. Wendy Maltz's capacity as one of our country's leading experts with respect to healing from past sexual abuse is also reflected in this book. Chapters on how to recognize fantasy traps and heal or even change unwanted fantasies provide individuals with important insights and tools to alter disturbing fantasies. Finally, the authors offer advice on how to share fantasies with your lover and how to create new fantasies.
I found this book remarkable as it addresses an important issue in a very matter of fact way. Once again, it becomes clear how diverse women's sexualities are. The authors provide a logical framework for different fantasy styles by separating sexual fantasies into two broad categories, 1) scripted fantasies which may contain scripted plots and identifiable characters versus 2) unscripted fantasies with a primary focus on sensations rather that character roles. These two categories are by no means exclusive. In fact, many women draw from both in order to make up their personal fantasies.
Different women have different modes for getting sexually aroused, and while some prefer visual stimulation, others may find that auditory, tactile, olfactory, kinesthetic (related to body movement) or flavor stimuli are important ingredients to trigger sexual arousal. Maltz and Boss conclude: "…Sex therapists have recognized for years that fantasy can be an effective aid in helping women with sexual performance. They have frequently recommended the use of fantasies to boost sexual response, sort of like a vibrator of mind…The beauty of fantasy is that we can tap this wellspring of creativity at any time, in any place, with no one else privy to our thoughts…"
I very much agree that sexual fantasies are private thoughts, which do not necessarily have to be shared with others. For those who choose to share their fantasies with a partner for sexual enrichment, the authors offer sound advice on how to best accomplish this and they provide various guidelines for how to enact fantasies while honoring each other's limits.
In conclusion, I can highly recommend Private Thoughts to anyone, female or male, who wants to learn more about the power of women's sexual fantasies.

Good read about female fantasy
By Christine Nicole Nelson
I found this book to be a very informative and empowering read. The information is presented in an easy to understand and clear way by dividing fantasies into categories. Basically it examines the meaning of sexual fantasies in a woman's life somewhat like one could do with dreams. However, dreams are unconscious/subconscious whereas fantasies are more of a conscious process.

Inspiring and informative for both male and female readers--an absolute TREASURE TROVE for authors of Erotica
By Voracious Reader
Husbands and wives, boyfriends and sweethearts, lesbian lovers--this is a WONDERFUL resource for you. Such a very thoughtful, contemplative study of female sexual fantasies. It's such a delight to discover the richness of the sexual fantasies that women enjoy.
For authors of erotica--as I am--this is the most fruitful resource since The Erotic Mind, by Jack Morin--which no author of erotica should miss.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Short Stories of the Uncanny and the Unexplained, by Chris Constantin

"My dear fellow, myths are nothing but a less disturbing form of reality”
--
This volume contains short stories that have something in common: the element of the unexplained – or, to use another term, the uncanny. Such stories are characterized by their ambiguity, as they are offered neither as explicitly supernatural, nor as the result of mere hallucination or illusion of the senses. And that, ultimately, is what makes them unsettling, disturbing, and scary. You, the reader, are at the very core of this ambiguity – this haze area where reality and unreality meet. Do the stories portray supernatural events? Do they feature demons and ghosts? Perhaps they are simply exemplifications of the frailty of the mind; sad, horrific manifestations of madness. The decision is entirely up to you, but make no mistake: there are no easy way-outs. The title of the book, 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea' functions as a reminder (dare one call it a warning?) that these stories involve impossible dilemmas that push the human mind to the edge of insanity. Nothing is what it seems – and this also applies to this book itself as the readers reaching the Epilogue will discover.

About the Author
I lead a double life, fluidly shared between the academia and the dark depths of fiction: During the day, I am a researcher and university lecturer of fantasy and horror fiction. During the night, I wear my glasses, grab my pen (or my laptop, anyway) and dive into the fascinating process of creating worlds, characters, and plots. I have authored several novels (one of them published by a well-known publishing house) - all of them under a different pen name. None of them - "Chris Constantin" included - is my real name. After all, even Batman is called "Bruce Wayne" during the day.

Original, masterfully written, full of surprises.
By Rena K.T.
I've read quite a bit of suspense stories, growing up with E.A. Poe, HP Lovecraft, Stephen King and Neil Gaiman. The problem with such stories is that pretty soon they start to seem a repetition of themselves. The same old ghost, the same old monster, the same old motifs. It really takes something special to draw my interest these days when it comes to mystery. Boy, was I happily surprised with this book!

As the author promises, there are many different kinds of stories hidden in this gem, and I enjoyed ALL of them, even those that shouldn't have been my cup of tea (for instance, I'm not too keen on alien entities). They are all very well written, with just the right balance between beautiful, descriptive language and a text accessible to its readers (if I need to use a dictionary in every other sentence, something's wrong).

I think the best comment I can give for this book is that the author managed to do something pretty amazing: be original and innovative in an oversaturated genre. Some stories do pay homage to the old masters (which is another way of saying they have been done before), but they are still very engaging and worth reading. But there are also many stories there that are truly unique in their conception, and they really make you think. It's a veritable achievement, to make that happen in the span of a short story.

Oh, and I really must mention the Epilogue. Utterly ingenious, and deeply unsettling! I can't say more without giving it away, you've got to see it for yourself!

An unexpected spooky thriller and beautifully written. I truly loved it
By Nora
An unexpected spooky thriller and beautifully written. I truly loved it.

(As a note to the author, the book has some formatting issues with tab and indent. Look up how to “nuke” your manuscript with text.doc and then maybe reload to kdp. They are minor formatting problems and your writing more than makes up for it, but if you’re a perfectionist, it’s an easy fix.)

From Booklist
It's been more than 40 years since The Interpreter's Bible (IB) was first published (1951-57). With this volume, Abingdon Press (a division of the United Methodist Publishing House) begins publication of a new edition of the set, scheduled to appear in 12 volumes over the next six years. With an 11-person editorial board chaired by Leander E. Keck (Yale University Divinity School), 14 consultants, and 97 contributors, The New Interpreter's Bible (NIB) "is to bring the best in contemporary biblical scholarship into the service of the church to enhance preaching, teaching, and study of the scriptures."

NIB is an ecumenical work with some 25 religions represented among the contributors, though the majority come from Protestant denominations. Nevertheless, as Keck points out in his introduction, the writers in NIB are a far more theologically diverse group than those in IB, which "inevitably reflected the perspectives of white male liberal Protestants." Keck notes that contributors include 22 women (compared with one in IB) as well as African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Native American authors.

This first volume includes general essays on the biblical canon and English versions of the Bible and various essays on biblical interpretation and the Old Testament. These introductory essays alone suggest the increased ecumenism of the work; witness the series of essays with such titles as "Reading the Bible as African Americans" and "Reading the Bible as Asian Americans." The bulk of the volume consists of texts and commentary on the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus. As in IB, the work features two translations and commentary. Unlike IB, however, the dual translations are the New International Version and the New Revised Standard Version, replacing the Authorized (King James) Version and Revised Standard Version of IB. The translations stand out nicely on a green background. The other significant change is that commentary appears after the various units of scripture (such as Genesis 50:15-21 or Exodus 20:12-17) rather than right in the middle of the translations, as was the case with IB, which printed the exegesis and exposition on the same pages as the translation. This created a somewhat confusing appearance for the novice. Each section of the scripture concludes with a "Commentary" and "Reflections." The introductory essay, "Features of The New Interpreter's Bible," indicates that the "Commentary" is an exegetical analysis while the "Reflections" "are meant to stimulate the thought of preachers and teachers." The work is extensively footnoted, and there are several bibliographies as well.

The Board noticed a few minor problems. The text is often of light type; while certainly not unreadable, differences in darkness can be noted from page to page. Also, many of the main, boldface headings in the essays appear in a difficult-to-read green typeface, though many headings also appear in black. Like IB, maps and illustrations are few and far between. Nevertheless, this volume represents an excellent start to the new series. Although the Board will withhold final judgment until the set is complete, academic and public libraries will almost certainly want to add this reasonably priced volume to their collections.

By FrKurt Messick
The New Interpreter's Bible is a twelve-volume series, updating the popular Interpreter's Bible from a few decades ago. There are several key features common to all of the volumes of this series. First, each includes a two-column, double translation of the Biblical text (NIV - New International Version, and NRSV - New Revised Standard Version) arranged by topical unit or story. Then, they provide commentaries that look at the passages as a whole, as well as verse-by-verse. Third, interesting Reflection pieces that relate the passages to each other, to history, and to current concerns occur at the conclusion of each passage. Fourth, introductory articles for each book are provided that discuss transmission, historical background, cultural setting, literary concerns, and current scholarship. Finally, there are general articles about the Bible, each Testament, and various types of literature (Narrative, Gospel, Wisdom Literature, etc.) are provided to give general placement and knowledge about the text overall.
The list of contributors, editors, and consultants on the project is a veritable Who's Who of biblical and theological scholarship, representing all major traditions and schools of thought liberal and conservative. Leander Keck, of the Yale Divinity School, is the primary editor of the series.
The volumes were published individually, and can be purchased individually, which is a good thing, given that they are a bit expensive. But for any serious biblical scholar, preacher, student, or enthusiast, they are invaluable.
--Volume I--
The first volume of this twelve-volume set naturally has the book of Genesis. However, before getting into the text itself, this volume provides a generous collection of essays and articles. In the General Introduction to the series, editor Leander Keck wrote, `The Bible has its own way of commending itself to those whose careful reading opens understanding. The NIB will have fulfilled its purpose when it helps that happen.'
This first volume is divided into several major sections: (I) the General Introduction to the Series, (II) How We Got Our Bible, (III) How the Bible is Read, Interpreted, and Used, (IV) The Background of the Old Testament Texts, and (V) Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus.
In the second section, `How We Got Our Bible', scholars Daniel Harrington SJ and Keith Crim provide essays on the formation of the canon, and on modern English versions of the Bible. These deal with historical issues as well as translation and transmission issues; there are controversial elements here, and the writers provide a fair appraisal of differing ideas.
In the third section, `How the Bible is Read, Interpreted, and Used', there are thirteen articles that deal with such diverse issues as why the Bible has authority, how the bible is interpreted in Jewish tradition and in Christian tradition, how the Bible is used in preaching, and a series of essays looking at issue of interpretation from specific backgrounds, such as African-American, Native American, Hispanic, and Women's viewpoints.
The fourth section deals specifically with the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures. These articles look at issues of early Jewish religion, Israelite history and culture, the ancient Near East as a whole, and textual issues and variants.
These sections taken as a whole provide a magnificent background to the study of the Bible, making this volume, just for this series of articles, a must-have for any biblical scholar or student. The names of Blenkinsopp, Sanderson, Buttrick, Gonzalez, and Massey should be well known to any serious student of the Bible, and one finds them here as well.
The sections dealing with the first three books of the Bible - Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus - illustrate well the method and content of the rest of the series. Each text is dealt with primarily by one author, who provides introductory materials, commentary and reflections. Terence Fretheim, professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary, assumes the task of Genesis. Walter Brueggemann of Columbia Theological Seminary, takes Exodus. Walter Kaiser, Jr., of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, has the task of Leviticus. Each of these scholars brings a strong background of Biblical scholarship, consisting of a host of books on related topics. Their analyses are insightful and useful for individual and group study, preaching, reflection and inspiration.
High praise goes to the general editorial staff for working with such strong authors/scholars, that their work fits together well as part of this set while retaining their individual characteristics (much like the writers of the Bible itself!).

The best of the best.
By Joshua Villines
Most people understand that the study of Scripture is an enormous task; and that there is a considerable theological heritage to even the most benign of passages. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to translate that understanding into a willingness to genuinely delve into the vast pool of material out there. In addition, it's hard to know whom to trust.

You can trust the New Interpreter's Bible series. All of the scholars who contributed are the best in their field. In addition, the layout (which includes two complete translations - the NIV and the NRSV) is conducive to both scholarly and spiritual study of the texts.

Each text is broken down into discrete units followed by general commentary on the passage, verse by vers analysis of key issues, and then an overview of study questions. The commentators address issues of authorship, historical setting, translation, theological history, and personal application. In addition, they graciously point to excellent sources for further reading.

Speaking as a pastor, it is my strong opinion that every English-speaking Christian who is serious about Bible study should own the complete set.

A great commentary
By Empedocles
There are many commentaries of the Bible out there on the market. In fact, the market seems so glutted with them it is hard to know what to choose. Every Christian bookstore usually has three or more shelves filled with commentaries, but as the old saying goes, quantity is not quality.

One thing I found very dissapointing with previous Bible commentaries and study bibles is the authors were very unwilling to actually question the Bible and what occurs in it. "It is right, because it is God's infallible word, and because it is God's infallible word, everything in it is right" is basically the sort of philosophy I came across in Evangelical and other commentaries which seem to dominate the stores here. But does this philosophy make sense when so many religions have their own book(s) and claim them to be the infallible word of the Deity or Deities that dictate them? What about the complex historical and literary questions surrounding the four canonical gospels, and the nature of the historical Jesus? What about the terrible violence and rapine we see in so much of the Old Testament, much of it seemingly ordained by God? What about the extra-canonical books from which the composers of the Bible drew inspiration (especially the New Testament and the emphasis on a coming apocalypse, or Jude's quoting by Enoch?) On what authority do we judge the Bible to be authoritative?

This commentary has answered all of my questions to my great relief and satisfaction, without destroying my faith. The great thing about this commentary is it tackles these problems head on without sticking their heads in the intellectual sand and resorting to empty sophistry to defend the authority and canonicity of the Bible. The writers of the commentary are also not averse to critical historical scholarship, which instead of destroying the Bible's integrity and beauty, actually reinforces it and sheds much greater light on issues that seem strange. For example, the account of a world-destroying flood makes little sense if it is understood to be a single, global historical event (as many fundamentalists insist) but makes perfect sense when compared with the common stock of Near Eastern myths, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, which the writers of Genesis appropriated and used to tell an important theological truth - the terrible sinfulness of the human heart and its dark, world destroying consequences. One only needs to think about the human invention of the atom bomb out of the scientific quest for truth and beauty and motivated people like Dirac, Einstein and Schrodinger to develop the beautiful mathematics of quantum mechanics as a real world example of this theological truth. The commentators build on this critical approach, along with a wealth of other information they use to put the Bible in a historical and cultural context.

My favourite part of this set is the 'reflections' section. After each passage is quoted, the reader is challenged to reflect on what the Bible is actually saying, and whether it is relevant to the modern world. It is easy to simply read a commentary where the author tries to paper over a crack of problem as if it doesn't exist - take the apocalyptic strains in the Gospel of Mark for example. Is a theology based on the imminent coming of Christ out of the clouds like Zeus and his thunderbolts relevant to a world dominated by science, technology, postmodernism and greedy materialism? Are we going to find solace when the book of Revelation literally predicts hundreds of millions of people are going to die horribly before the final renewing of creation? Are the archaic rules of Leviticus and Deutronomy, particularly the anti-homosexual regulations, as obsolete as those requiring us to sacrifice animals on altars and stone adulters alive? How does a Christian respond to a culture that demands equal time and tolerance for all religions, when Christ urges his followers to convert the entire world to what was then a fringe sect of Judaism?

These sorts of questions are extremely tough for any person who accepts the Bible as God's communication of his will to humanity, and these questions are tackled head on in the commentary without flinching, claiming to speak for God (i.e. God's word is God word and that is the final say) or that doubters and disbelivers are going to hell.

The commentary also has an excellent unity throughout. Each commentary relates to the Bible as a whole, not just as an isolated book amoung fragments. Few commentaries manage to do this, and even the best evangelical commentaries (Zondervan) find it hard to treat the Bible as a unity.

This commentary, despite its considerable expense, is a must-buy for understanding a text as difficult, as controversial, and as influential as the Bible. Witches have been burned, wars have been fought, and great people sacrificed because of how they understood the contents of this book. If you are an atheist or agnostic who wants to understand the Bible without being told what to believe, a Christian who is willing to think and be challenged, or a believer of another faith curious about what Christians understand the Bible to say, or even just curious about the Bible itself - then get this commentary. It is the best and it is the commentary I return to again and again, while the others at home gather dust.

Alice Munro's Best: Selected Stories, by Alice Munro

In her lengthy and fascinating introduction Margaret Atwood says “Alice Munro is among the major writers of English fiction of our time. . . . Among writers themselves, her name is spoken in hushed tones.”

This splendid gift edition is sure to delight Alice Munro’s growing body of admirers, what Atwood calls her “devoted international readership.” Long-time fans of her stories will enjoy meeting old favourites, where their new setting in this book may reveal new sides to what once seemed a familiar story; devoted followers may even dispute the exclusion of a specially-beloved story. Readers lucky enough to have found her recently will be delighted, as one masterpiece succeeds another.

The 17 stories are carefully arranged in the order in which she wrote them, which allows us to follow the development of her range. “A Wilderness Station,” for example, breaks “short story rules” by taking us right back to the 1830s then jumping forward more than 100 years. “The Albanian Virgin” destroys the idea that her stories are set in B.C. or in Ontario’s “Alice Munro Country.” And “The Bear Came Over the Mountain,” the story behind the film Away From Her, takes us far from the world of young girls learning about sex into unflinching old age.

This is a book to read slowly, savouring each story. It deserves a place in every Canadian book-lover’s library.

Georgia got a part-time job in a bookstore, working several evenings a week. Ben went away on his yearly cruise. The summer turned out to be unusually hot and sunny for the West Coast. Georgia combed her hair out and stopped using most of her makeup and bought a couple of short halter dresses. Sitting on her stool at the front of the store, showing her bare brown shoulders and sturdy brown legs, she looked like a college girl — clever but full of energy and bold opinions. The people who came into the store liked the look of a girl — a woman — like Georgia. They liked to talk to her. Most of them came in alone. They were not exactly lonely people, but they were lonely for somebody to talk to about books. Georgia plugged in the kettle behind the desk and made mugs of raspberry tea. Some favored customers brought in their own mugs. Maya came to visit and lurked about in the background, amused and envious.

“You know what you’ve got?” she said to Georgia. “You’ve got a salon! Oh, I’d like to have a job like that! I’d even like an ordinary job in an ordinary store, where you fold things up and find things for people and make change and say thank you very much, and colder out today, will it rain?”

“You could get a job like that,” said Georgia.

“No, I couldn’t. I don’t have the discipline. I was too badly brought up. I can’t even keep house without Mrs. Hanna and Mrs. Cheng and Sadie.”

It was true. Maya had a lot of servants, for a modern woman, though they came at different times and did separate things and were nothing like an old-fashioned household staff. Even the food at her dinner parties, which seemed to show her own indifferent touch, had been prepared by someone else.

Usually, Maya was busy in the evenings. Georgia was just as glad, because she didn’t really want Maya coming into the store, asking for crazy titles that she had made up, making Georgia’s employment there a kind of joke. Georgia took the store seriously. She had a serious, secret liking for it that she could not explain. It was a long, narrow store with an old-fashioned funnelled entryway between two angled display windows. From her stool behind the desk Georgia was able to see the reflections in one window reflected in the other. This street was not one of those decked out to receive tourists. It was a wide east-west street filled in the early evening with a faintly yellow light, a light reflected off pale stucco buildings that were not very high, plain storefronts, nearly empty sidewalks. Georgia found this plainness liberating after the winding shady streets, the flowery yards and vine-framed windows of Oak Bay. Here the books could come into their own, as they never could in a more artful and enticing suburban bookshop. Straight long rows of paperbacks. (Most of the Penguins then still had their orange-and-white or blue-and-white covers, with no designs or pictures, just the unadorned, unexplained titles.) The store was a straight avenue of bounty, of plausible promises. Certain books that Georgia had never read, and probably never would read, were important to her, because of the stateliness or mystery of their titles. In Praise of Folly. The Roots of Coincidence. The Flowering of New England. Ideas and Integrities.

Sometimes she got up and put the books in stricter order. The fiction was shelved alphabetically, by author, which was sensible but not very interesting. The history books, however, and the philosophy and psychology and other science books were arranged according to certain intricate and delightful rules — having to do with chronology and content — that Georgia grasped immediately and even elaborated on. She did not need to read much of a book to know about it. She got a sense of it easily, almost at once, as if by smell.

At times the store was empty, and she felt an abundant calm. It was not even the books that mattered then. She sat on the stool and watched the street — patient, expectant, by herself, in a finely balanced and suspended state.

She saw Miles’ reflection — his helmeted ghost parking his motorcycle at the curb — before she saw him. She believed that she had noted his valiant profile, his pallor, his dusty red hair (he took off his helmet and shook out his hair before coming into the store), and his quick, slouching, insolent, invading way of moving, even in the glass.

It was no surprise that he soon began to talk to her, as others did. He told her that he was a diver. He looked for wrecks, and lost airplanes, and dead bodies. He had been hired by a rich couple in Victoria who were planning a treasure-hunting cruise, getting it together at the moment. Their names, the destination were all secrets. Treasure-hunting was a lunatic business. He had done it before. His home was in Seattle, where he had a wife and a little daughter.

Everything he told her could easily have been a lie.

He showed her pictures in books — photographs and drawings, of mollusks, jellyfish, the Portuguese man-of-war, sargasso weed, the Caribbean flying fish, the girdle of Venus. He pointed out which pictures were accurate, which were fakes. Then he went away and paid no more attention to her, even slipping out of the store while she was busy with a customer. Not a hint of a goodbye. But he came in another evening, and told her about a drowned man wedged into the cabin of a boat, looking out the watery window in an interested way. By attention and avoidance, impersonal conversations in close proximity, by his oblivious prowling, and unsmiling, lengthy, gray-eyed looks, he soon had Georgia in a disturbed and not disagreeable state. He stayed away two nights in a row, then came in and asked her, abruptly, if she would like a ride home on his motorcycle.

Georgia said yes. She had never ridden on a motorcycle in her life. Her car was in the parking lot; she knew what was bound to happen.

She told him where she lived. “Just a few blocks up from the beach,” she said.

“We’ll go to the beach, then. We’ll go and sit on the logs.”

That was what they did. They sat for a while on the logs. Then, though the beach was not quite dark or completely deserted, they made love in the imperfect shelter of some broom bushes. Georgia walked home, a strengthened and lightened woman, not in the least in love, favored by the universe.

“My car wouldn’t start,” she told the baby-sitter, a grandmother from down the street. “I walked all the way home. It was lovely, walking. Lovely. I enjoyed it so much.”

Her hair was wild, her lips were swollen, her clothes were full of sand.

Perfection
By An admirer of Saul
A superb collection of stories set in small town Canada and the people in them; the lonely; the misinterpretations between men and women, parents and children, the young and the old and the search for meaning in lives mainly governed by circumstance and chance. Each story is rich in detail and a joy to read.
Dedicated Munro readers would have come across these tales elsewhere, but as an introduction-or the book you give out to introduce her to friends and family-this is a fantastic collection.
'Perfection' is often used to describe Alice Munro's stories. As you have to write at least 20 words for an Amazon review, writing 'Perfection' 20 times would be a worthy review. Already, Alice Munro can be classified as an all time Nobel great.

Insightful descriptions of a small Canadian society

Insightful short stories about the part of Canada ( south western Ontario) that I grew up in and a remarkable description of its society and social mores of the 1940's through 1960's.

Reading between the Wines, by Terry Theise

Acclaimed importer and wine guru Terry Theise, long known for his top-notch portfolio and his illustrious writing, now offers this opinionated, idiosyncratic, and beautifully written testament to wine. What constitutes beauty in wine, and how do we appreciate it? What role does wine play in a soulful, sensual life? Can wines of place survive in a world of globalized styles and 100-point scoring systems? In his highly approachable style, Theise describes how wine can be a portal to aesthetic, emotional, even mystical experience—and he frankly asserts that these experiences are most likely to be inspired by wines from artisan producers. Along the way, Theise tells us a little about how he got where he is today, explores the meaning of wine in the lives of vintners he has known, and praises particular grape varieties. Reading between the Wines is a passionate tribute to wine—and to what it can say to us once we learn to listen.

Review
"A consequential book, rich in ideas and powerful in feeling."--"New York Times"

"I read it almost in one gulp: he writes beautifully, uninhibitedly... almost, one might say, drunkenly... a man after my own heart."--"-Hugh Johnson"

"Wise and funny, committed and sincere, but never dogmatic. . . .A passionate defense of the importance of wine."--"The World of Fine Wine"

"Theise first demystifies how to experience wine, then remystifies it by reinstating pleasure as what it's all about." STARRED REVIEW--"Library Journal"

"It's not even wine that Theise is really tackling. It's aesthetics. As such he skillfully reminds us of wine's timeless place in culture."--"Sf Chronicle"

From the Inside Flap
"There is only one reason that the American wine enthusiast is now completely enamored with German and Austrian wines: Terry Theise! This glorious book not only brilliantly showcases one man's love affair with all the beauties that can flow from the bottle, it definitively makes the case for the wines that are the most superbly suited to be served with food."—Chef Charlie Trotter

"Terry Theise's humane, subtle and engaging book illustrates the superiority of wisdom to mere knowledge. Read and be richer."—Andrew Jefford, columnist for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine

"Impassioned, insistent, and inimitable, Terry Theise is America's foremost wine philosopher. Lots of writers can explain the "what" of wine. Terry, uniquely, inspires us with the 'why'. I devoured Reading Between the Wines; it's the single best book I've ever read on why wine matters."—Karen MacNeil, author of The Wine Bible

"If you think you know something about wine, try Terry Theise's Reading Between the Wines because until you do, you haven't really started."—Tom Stevenson, author of Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia

A necessity on a wine lover's shelves
By Katie Pizzuto
Any man who quotes Anaïs Nin in a book about wine automatically gets bonus Gonzo points from me, and if in same said book he's got wordplay with Blue Öyster Cult lyrics, well I develop a crush that tends to sway me to overlook the fact that I needed to keep a dictionary handy while reading his book, because I've simply never had cause to use words like ecumenical or pusillanimous. Terry Theise, iconic importer and rock star wannabe, will be the first to tell you that "there's a lot of lousy prose and shallow thinking out there" in the world of wine writing, but his is as far removed from that sad description as wine writing can possibly get, and I'm thankful for it.

My bookshelves are burdened down with tomes about wine. They're bowed with the weight of books given biblical status for their wealth of information and books that serve as little more than romantic memoirs about wine-soaked lives. But there are very few--in fact only one other I can think of besides this, Nossiter's "Liquid Memory"--that exist as visceral dissertations on what wine does...move us. Theise's new book speaks of wine having the capability of being a portal to the mystic, and his conviction to this end is utterly seductive. There were points when I found myself reading his proselytizing out on my deck well past twilight, sometimes laughing out loud, sometimes nodding in passionate agreement, and other times lost in his candor. It's no small coincidence that Terry describes taking wine-tasting notes as often being obtrusive when you are engaged in what you've just experienced, because I felt the same about trying to take notes while reading this book--"it's like ignoring a rainbow so you can balance your checkbook."

Theise's argument for terroir is impeccable, and one that I imagine would convince even the most hardened New Worlders to bend with the breeze, if only because his argument is sound...logical...clear. He manages to straddle the murky fault line between spirit and substance--between ethos, pathos and logos--and he manages to do it while jibing you about Chateau Bluebols at the same time. I imagine Terry to be the kind of guy that makes you feel like a complete idiot for being lulled into complacency by the gears of the wine industry, and then consoles you as you lick your wounds by offering you a glass of the most delicate, mind-blowing riesling you've ever let pass your lips. For the limited amount of time we have in our lives to imbibe, it begs the question, why drink what doesn't move you? Why drink the enological equivalent of white noise? His rhetoric is both compelling and convincing.

I have but one gripe with Reading Between the Wines and that is its forced linearity for a style of writing that is otherwise so intrinsically organic. It's like taking an e.e. cummings poem, dissecting it and cramming that dissection into an eighth-grade lit class outline. At times, Terry's views were broken down into a sort of laundry list, and that sacrificed some of the book's "naturalness" in my opinion, but that's probably also partly me being a pain in the ass after one too many glasses of nowhere wine. In all honesty, when I read his description of a red Burgundy, "If truffles had orgasms, they might emit this fragrance" I'm nearly certain my schoolgirl crush kicked in, and I probably just started looking for any reason to find flaw with Theise so that the spell would be broken. "Reading Between the Wines" is easily the most passionate, poetic, and necessary book on wine I've ever read, and it ended all way too soon.

Full of insights, but occasionally over the top
By Chambolle
Here we have yet another in a growing library of recent books that delve into the heart and soul of wine and ask the Big Questions. Why does wine matter? Why does terroir matter? Who gives a damn about "scoring" wine? Are there universal and absolute measures of "quality," or is a simple and honest bottle of cool, crisp rose, slurped with good ham, ripe melon and a fresh baguette on a hot summer day as "great" in its own way as a bottle of 1990 La Tache, sipped reverently on a grand occasion? Is Robert Parker The Devil, or just a guy with his own quirky palate who has been misunderstood and misused by armies of newbies hungry for easy answers to the questions "what wine should I buy" and "what wine am I supposed to like"?

Terry Theise has got his chops down, no doubt about it. He sure as heck knows German and Austrian wines better than any human I know -- to the extent that his focus on these wines makes portions of this book a bit of a tough sled for a dyed in the wool Burgundy addict like me, and probably for other folks who aren't devoted accolytes of Riesling, Gruner Veltliner, Scheurebe and the like. It would be easier for me to connect with the book were it more focused on the wines, the growers and the land that I do know pretty well, which ain't Germany and Austria.

As others have said here, this is a heartfelt and insightful little book, full of wisdom and witticisms about the making and enjoyment of wine -- wine as an integral part of life and culture, not as an academic exercise, or a competition among Screaming Eagle swilling hedge fund managers who buy and drink by the Parker bible. For all that, Theise is not a Parker basher, like some others. This book attempts to put both ends of the spectrum -- the terroiristes and the Wine Advocates and everyone in-between -- in a healthy perspective. There are turns of phrase and random observations that made me laugh out loud, or stop and think for a long, long time. Flashes of recognition abound.

So why not an unqualified five stars? Well, at times Theise wanders off into flights of psychobabble that are just a tad too much. At other times its just a bit too clever and too cute.

Despite these quibbles and misgivings -- and they are purely my own and may not be there for others -- I strongly recommend that anyone who cares about wine and who spends a good bit of time drinking and pondering it should buy the book and read it with a glass in hand. Short and to the point, it will get your juices flowing and make you think about the fermented grape juice to which quite a few of us devote quite a bit of our time and energy.

One of the Best Wine Books in the Last Decade
By J. Lefevere
Joining Lawrence Osbourne's The Accidental Connoisseur and Matt Kramer's Making Sense of Wine on the thoughtful wine enthusiasts bookshelf, Theise has written a book that is so wholly singular to his point of view, yet so persuasive that he may yet convert thousands to the wonders of small, artisanal wines from around the world, joining the insider cadre that have followed his German, Austrian and grower Champagne import selections and annual catalog-cum-stream of consciousness manifesto.

To be sure, Theise isn't the first to espouse a conviction about the value of Old World wines that are authentic, terroir-based and in possession of a bent toward the transcendental, he's just the first in the last decade to write with enough clarity and generosity of spirit to potentially turn New World agnostics into Old World disciples, connecting with a new generation of wine enthusiasts for whom the lifestyle mavens and old media dogs are as relatable as a narc at a biker rally.

While reading the slim volume, losing myself in the theatre of my mind, I imagine Theise sitting across the table from me in the dining room of an old row house in a hardscrabble town, maybe Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Upstate NY, somewhere suitably unfashionable, explaining to me his philosophy on wine -- and by proxy -- life. The education is just getting started when Theise says, at the end of the introduction, just pages into the book, "Confected wines are not designed for human beings; they are designed for `consumers.' Which do you want to be?" At this point, he has removed my defenses, punched me in the gut and put his arm around me whispering reassuringly that I am not that big of a jerk, there is still time to see the light; there is hope.

What follows in Reading between the Wines is as thoughtful of a rumination on small wine and the beauty of being human, in all of our fragility, that you are ever likely to find in a wine book.
