About the Author
Robert Bloch (1917-1994) was a horror, suspense, and science fiction writer and screenwriter, best known for the novel PSYCHO. Altogether, Bloch wrote over 220 stories collected in over two dozen collections, two dozen novels, screenplays for a dozen movies and three Star Trek episodes. His many awards included one Nebula Award, two Hugos, three World Fantasy Awards (including Lifetime Achievement), and five Bram Stoker Awards.

And a "can't put down" reader's delight. Along comes Hitchcock

Robert Bloch and Alfred Hitchcock created the ultimate partnership. Bloch's breezy, film noir and hard-boiled-like style, is immediately cinematic. And a "can't put down" reader's delight. Along comes Hitchcock, with what appears to be subtle, moderate changes for two significant characters in two foreshadowing scenes. With Norman cast by Anthony Perkins, instead of someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Mary Crane more sympathetic than Bloch's rather aggressive victim, Hitch takes Bloch further into the sometimes obscene psyche of a Midwest nut, not a California nut. Mary Crane, note the name. For Bloch, she was an opportunistic feeder, for Hitch the beauty in the shower. On to Psycho II, in which someone like Seymour could star, Bloch insisting that the fascinating Perkins wasn't Norman, until old age.

Brilliant!

Having loved the film for years, I thought it was time to read the book that inspired it. What a delight. The writing is suspenseful and clear. The characters are well drawn and three dimensional. The intersection of chapters that allows the reader to see what different characters are doing simultaneously is dynamic and keeps the reader intrigued.

As for the story itself, well it is simply brilliant. The action starts quickly and never lets up. Norman Bates is far more developed and sinister than in the film. Mary Crane is dark and depressing. Even Sam Loomis is complicated! Poor old Norman Bates just cannot seem to catch a break, well, until he has a break down.

The only complaint I have is that my very old used copy (that is aging and looks like was once for sale at the checkout of a supermarket) has quite a few spelling mistakes and weird errors: Lila becomes Lisa for 3 pages and punction is sporadic for a page! (I thought is was funny more so than anything else.)

The book is just superb. The last lines linger in your mind. I highly recommend it!

Outstanding Guide

I purchased this book because I am new to the Leasing Industry. In effort to be more knowledgeable, I purchased this book. So far, I'm in the early reading and can tell this is a GREAT ASSET! I read it every day with much anticipation.

Some earlier comments spoke negatively about the CD with Forms and worksheets. My book did not have the CD, but a caption in the front of the book tells me to visit this website for download of all the forms. Actually, it went very smooth and I am delighted with all the information. One thing about the download, you will need to re-adjust the formatting to get the form to print clearly. These documents are stored in RTF (Rich Text Format) and we use MSWord 07. Not a problem, I guess I expected to download and print with no adjustments of any kind. Thats not what happened. If you take the time to change your paper style, adjust your margins, and fill in your applicable data, the forms are WONDERFUL.

Overall, I wish I had this guide years ago! I wouldn't be so far behind the learning curve today.
Great Book! I highly encourage it.

Wow what a book. Very complete with all types of equipment leasing. Really good for me because i own an equipment rental business and i realized that my lease protects me from a lot of liability because its more like a finance lease and customer is responsible for all upon delivery. Book is 10.

In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing

This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook

This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.

A radical rethink

A CURRENT AND RADICAL RETHINK ON CONTRACT LAW: AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEBATE

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

Victor P. Goldberg, who writes this book, is Jerome L. Greene Professor of Transactional Law at Columbia University. His observations on contract law, which he generally approaches from an economic perspective – are meticulously argued and more often than not, radical.

How appropriate then, that this volume has been included as one of the latest titles in Edward Elgar’s ‘Rethinking Law’ series. Contract doctrines, which most regard as efficient, are, in Professor Goldberg’s view, terribly inefficient in many instances. Just how and why he reaches this conclusion is explained in detail in this thoughtful and analytical work, which is incorporates about a dozen (if you check the index) of the author’s previous essays and articles. Many of these have been revised and presented with new material as a follow-up.

As indicated by the title, the book focusses on how parties to a contract ‘design’ their contractual relations. With such an approach, says Goldberg, the reader can ‘glean… insights into doctrinal reform and contract interpretations.’

Conceivably such a stance is useful in the more complex contractual disputes, which don’t include those involving everyday consumer contracts, or ‘agreements between amateurs’. ‘For my purposes,’ says the author, ‘the category is defined by agreements for which both parties could be expected to have access to counsel.’

The subject matter of the essays contained in the book is diverse and illuminating, as numerous US cases are analysed with a view to reassessing key doctrines in contract law with a view to possible reforms. Yes, the context of the book is American, but its focus throughout is on contract design, as well as, in the words of the author, ‘the economic problems confronting contracting parties and the tools for coping with them.’

The book is divided into four sections to include direct damages… consequential damages… excuse and changed circumstances… (including the excuse doctrine)… and finally offer and acceptance, with reference to specific cases throughout. What seems to emerge throughout these discussions, as you would expect, are inconsistencies, controversies and debate.

For instance, in the first two sections of the book which focus on remedies, the example is cited of two cases in which a book publisher accepted an author’s manuscript, then refused to publish it. In one case, the unfortunate author received a nominal six cents; in the other case, the author won restitution for his or her time of over $300,000. (Sounds like the second author had a better lawyer!)

Certainly this book offers valuable insights and new perspectives on the often thorny problems of contract law as it can -- and does -- affect ‘sophisticated parties’. Lawyers as well as academics on both sides of the Atlantic will welcome the important contribution made here to the ongoing debates which rage continually within this core area of the law.
