3.5 stars, but with potential!

I reluctantly gave this book 3.5 stars because I thought the story had a lot of potential but it wasn't met. I'll explain further...

The story is about Jake, a teenager (I believe in Grade 11?) who has just discovered that he possesses a special gift, and he is a "gifted one". He is told by other gifted that he can't be with the girl he recently started a relationship with (and loves) because he will just endanger her, and they give him many examples of gifted ones losing people they love to the defiers because they target their weaknesses. There is not much information given about the defiers or where they come from, but we assume they are "evil" and the gifted ones are "good"

Nice idea with the gifts and how they manifest themselves and how they train together and so on, but not clear on what the covenant is, or what the rules are, or what their purpose is.

Why I deducted 1.5 stars:
First (minus half star)- while we are told that Jake and Anna have been best friends since they were young and had strong feelings for each other, I just didn't feel it. Their relationship seemed a bit (and I hate to say this word) cheesy. She was ready to give up on him so quickly and he was ready to give up on her so easily because someone told him so, I just think love is usually stronger than that, and harder to let go of, and it just didnt feel that strong to me.

Second - finally! A YA book told SOLELY from a male point of view!... but Jake kinda thought and acted like....a girl. He didn't really have a strong male personality like I've read in other books that have dual points of view but that's just my opinion and I couldn't really deduct a star for that.

Lastly (minus one star) and this could just be me totally, but the first 2/3 of the book seemed to draaaaaaggg... Things didn't really pick up until the end, and I'll be honest, I almost gave up on something eventful happening and I actually paused this book to read another that was released, and then continued it after. If I can put a book down to read another, and it doesn't keep me up until 2am because I HAVE to know how it ends, I can't give it 5 stars.

Hopefully the sequel picks up on the action a little quicker and gives us a little more background info and keeps me turning those pages.

The premise is interesting, but the characters lacked something.

The overall plot of Branded is interesting. There are people who are Gifted Ones possessing supernatural powers, this story centers on Jacob Rovert and his friends discovering their abilities and how it affects their lives and relationships. On the opposing side, the Defiers have similar powers and are enemies of the Gifted Ones.

Jake's story has potential. He loves a girl that he has grown up with named Anna, but he must keep his powers a secret from her for her own protection. His love for her is obvious in Branded, but I never felt like I understood why Jake loves Anna so passionately. The characters are flat and one dimensional. I was never given a reason to like Anna or even care about what happens to her. I read a bit of the next book in the series, and it appears to be written in Anna's voice, so maybe the author was holding back for that reason, but I just don't feel like this book pulled me in enough to keep me reading the trilogy.

Found the book to be extremely slow and didn't captivate me nor develop the characters enough. Let me tell you what frustrates me about all these positive reviews on here. There are so many fake or false reviews on products if you take the time to research it. This book being a great example. There are about THREE REAL reviews on this book on here. How can you tell? Go to see all my reviews when your reading an individuals review and you will see on here that almost every person who reviewed this item "SO WONFERFUL, GREAT READ, COULDN'T PUT IT DOWM, CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL, ETC" only has written one review EVER and it happens to be for this book. There is your red flag on fake reviews. I also noticed that most of the fake reviewers on here also posted the same review twice to up the star status. Some even had two positive reviews for the same book same reviewer. Let a book speak for itself from true consumers and not a bunch of fake reviews

In a wonderfully readable study aimed at not just the Tolkien fan but any literate person curious about this fantasy author's extraordinary popularity, British scholar Shippey (The Road to Middle-earth) makes an impressive, low-key case for why the creator of Middle-earth is deserving of acclaim. (Recent polls in Britain have consistently put The Lord of the Rings at the top of greatest books of the century lists.) Having taught the same Old English syllabus at Oxford that his subject once did, Shippey is especially well qualified to discuss Tolkien's Anglo-Saxon sources, notably Beowulf, for the elvish languages and names used in the fiction. The author's theory on the origin of the word hobbit, for example, is as learned as it is free of academic jargon. Even his analyses of the abstruse Silmarillion, Tolkien's equivalent of Joyce's Finnegans Wake, avoid getting too technical. In addition, Shippey shows that Tolkien as a storyteller often improved on his ancient sources, while The Lord of the Rings is unmistakably a work of its time. Shippey, an expert on Old English literature and the author of The Road to Middle Earth, has written a critical appreciation of the popular creator of The Hobbit and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The subtitle refers to Tolkien's ability to write about concerns of the 20th century (evil, religion, etc.) in stories that at first glance seem to be mere fantasy. Shippey examines Tolkien's published and many unfinished works (such as The Silmarillion), as well as the shorter poems and stories. He convincingly argues that Tolkien deserves to be ranked as a major literary figure. Shippey also castigates those critics, the so-called literati, for their vituperative and ill-informed attacks on Tolkien's reputation and achievements. This study is definitely not an introduction to the "Rings" books; because of the detailed readings on the major and minor works, it should be read by those who have already enjoyed the titles surveyed. Recommended for all public libraries, especially in the wake of the upcoming film version of "The Lord of the Rings"; undergraduate academic libraries will also want to obtain this fine work of criticism. Like J. R. R. Tolkien, Shippey is a philologist who believes that language and literature are inextricably related. Names, especially, carry meaning, and, proceeding from Tolkien's assertion that his fantasy fiction was "fundamentally linguistic in inspiration," Shippey demonstrates how Tolkien used names to generate the plots, moral concepts, and cultural resonance of his works, especially The Lord of the Rings. He argues that Tolkien's larger project was to re-create the prehistory of the Anglo-Saxons by writing the literature suggested by the relationships among old names. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were set near the end of the prehistory he constructed. Shippey maintains that, despite their backward glancing, Tolkien's Middle-Earth stories are essentially modern in their concern with the nature of evil, the hollowness of victory, and--though Tolkien characterized The Lord of the Rings as a Catholic book--deep religious skepticism. However academic such a proceeding may seem, it is keenly interesting because of Shippey's clear, if not uncomplicated, writing and because it substantiates "common" readers' great esteem for Tolkien. In several recent polls, British readers declared that The Lord of the Rings is the greatest book of the twentieth century, to the great dismay, the press noted, of the literati. Similar results of and reactions to polls in America are highly likely, which only makes this magisterial book more intriguing. Ray Olson

Tolkien Criticism for the New Millennium

Starting with Shippey's opening claim that "The dominant literary mode of the twentieth century has been the fantastic," this is a fascinating study of Tolkien, what influenced him, and what he in turn influenced. Shippey discusses the concepts of Evil and Myth, and places Tolkien in a group of "traumatized" authors, mostly veterans, who wrote non-realistic fiction (Orwell, Vonnegut, Golding, CS Lewis, TH White, Heller, and (stretching it a bit) LeGuin). Shippey also continues his examination of the pagan roots of Tolkien's concept of courage from his 1983 "The Road to Middle-earth," and includes a useful chapter on the often-neglected shorter works. His examination of the critics who dismiss Tolkien offers excellent insights into the failures of modern criticism. This book is a good place for the novice reader of Tolkien criticism to start, and there is an extensive bibliography of other critical works. The copy I borrowed on interlibrary-loan is full of post-it notes awaiting transfer to the copy I have on order!

Pretty Good Analysis

Though the best analysis of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is still Paul Kocher's MASTER OF MIDDLE EARTH (and next, TOLKIEN: MAN AND MYTH by Joseph Pearce), this book can sit unashamedly beside them on the shelf of any Tolkienphile. After a superb introduction, the first chapter is a bumpy ride for readers not of a philological bent, as he examines particular words Tolkien may have mined from ancient Anglo-Saxon and Nordic sources and how these words were employed. Occasionally, Shippey makes statements that are too bold: although it's likely Tolkien did read and was familiar with the texts Shippey cites, Shippey fails to always give citations from Tolkien's primary sources to prove it -- or as evidence that Tolkien meant to use individual words in the way Shippey suggests. Additionally, Shippy occasionally suggests that he could read Tolkien's mind, by telling us what Tolkien must've been thinking at a given moment. While interesting speculation, it isn't labeled as such. Too, Shippy's stile and sentence structure is baffling in several places, leaving one to read a sentence several times to figure out the subject. Overall, though, his analysis of Tolkien's works isn't derogatory or negative, as is the case with critics of more stunted imagination or whose templates THE LORD OF THE RINGS refuses to fit. Shippey identifies himself as other than a believing Christian and his examination in those areas is cursory, but nevertheless valid. He also tackles a few of Tolkien's lesser-known works such as the wonderful short story "Leaf by Niggle", which should be more often anthologized. So, if you've re-read your Kocher until the cover's dangling, and you thought the critical survey in Pearce's biography was flawed only in being altogether too brief, this is a solid, positive, and highly informative critical edition and a must for citizens of Middle Earth.

I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.
Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.
I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.

This textbook is comprehensive, and the information timeless. It arrived in excellent condition. I use it as a basis for teaching a course on this topic in an industrial classroom.
